TRUFFLE IN ITALY: WHERE TO FIND IT
All Italian regions are rich of truffles
The Italian peninsula is an area of exceptional interest in agribusiness.
Microclimate and soil composition donate to Italy all the elements needed to stand out in the world for the generous fertility of its land.
In Italy there are numerous truffle species of which, only 8 of them are admitted to trading: black truffles, white truffles, scorzone truffle, uncinatum truffle, brumale truffle, bianchetto truffle, black muscat truffle and the smooth black truffle.
Truffles are found in nearly all italian regions although, of course, there are more suitable areas, where it is easier to find good quality truffles.
Over time some areas have distinguished not only for the abundance and quality of truffles that produce, but also for the ability to create an economy around the market of this prized fungus. So, the most famous White Truffle of Alba (Piemonte), Acqualagna White truffle (Marche) , Nero di Norcia ( Umbira) , Nero di Bagnoli (Campania)
Below we summarize some of the regions where the presence of different varieties of truffles in Italy is very important:
It is considered the home of the white truffle: Here we find Alba, the town where the International White Truffle Festival d’ Alba is held annually and where the National Truffle Study Centre has the HQ.
In Piedmont we can also find other varieties of truffles: the Black Truffle, the Scorzone, the Uncinatum and less valuable species such as Brumale.
The Ligurian Langhe and the Val Bormida, in the province of Savona, are the most important truffle zones in Liguria. Here we collect the White Truffle and all species of black truffle.
The Uncinatum and the other blacks truffles are present in good quantities in the river valleys and in the Mont Scrivia Antola area, up to the promontory of Portofino.
Among the areas with the greatest vocation for truffle hunting in Lombardy there are: l ‘Oltrepò Pavese, between the provinces of Alessandria and Piacenza for the black truffle, until the course of the Po for the white truffle and the Brumale. Some areas of the province of Bergamo produce interesting amounts of prized black truffle and scorzone.
Areas that produce blacks truffles are the Colli Berici (Vicenza) and the Euganean Hills (Padova), in particular near the town of Cinto Euganeo. On the hills of Garda and the Lessini Mountains (Verona) we can find mainly the Scorzone and Black Truffle. The Brumale is collected in the village of Arsiè (Belluno) and Conegliano Veneto (Treviso). The Precious White Truffle, Bianchetto and Scorzone gather the Po Delta area.
The cultivation of Nero di Cognaro born in this region, where we find a great variety of truffles, especially Blacks and Scorzone. These two categories of tuber arise directly from our Venetian lands of which the Brand is farmer.
Trentino Alto Adige
We find the black truffle and Scorzone in Vallagarina, in the Valley of the Lakes and in some parts of the Valsugana.
Friuli Venezia Giulia
Also in Friuli we find some varieties of Tuber: the precious White truffle and Black Truffle. The black truffle is also an object of experimentation for cultivation by the region: it is widely cultivated in the areas of Spilimbergo, Torre Valleys and Cividale.
In the province of Piacenza they collect the White truffle, the Uncinato, the Scorzone and the Black Truffle.
In the province of Parma the most important truffle is the Uncinato. For the harvest of this truffle the Val Baganza is the most important center of the province. For the white truffle we can consider in a hilly area, the town of Berceto Borgo Val d and Taro.
The white truffle is mainly present in areas of the Crete Senesi, of San Miniato of the Tiber Valley, Mugello and Casentino. The black truffle is found in limestone massifs of Chianti, in Mugello of Montagnola, in the Val di Chiana and the Casentino. Scorzone is particularly widespread in Tuscany, and it is frequent in calcareous soils covered by quercette and artificial pine forests in the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Siena, Grosseto, Pisa, Lucca and Pistoia.
The most famous centers are Acqualagna and Pergola, the headquarters of the precious White Truffle markets of national importance. In the province of Ancona the most renowned centers are Arcevia, Sassoferrato, Pergola, Genga, Fabriano and Cerreto. In the province of Macerata black truffles are widespread. In the province of Ascoli Piceno there is plenty of black truffles that, when harvested in sandy soils, is very smooth and good size (it is always highly rated in markets).
Throughout the entire area from east to north of the city of Perugia gather excellent specimens of white truffle, Scorzone and Uncinatum.
In the province of Terni we have important centers as Orvieto, Fabro and Allerona.
The black truffle is present in substantial quantities throughout the Valnerina, Norcia and Cascia. The Binachetto is collected throughout the region.
Nowadays the quatification of global or national production of truffles is not possible. We can just dare estimates, but what is certain is that from Italy comes most of the truffle used in the best tables in the world, particularly the finest races, either whites than blacks. Also because the valuable species are harvested only in Italy and, in small quantities.
